Should they be detailed brushes, or structural???

make it detail, there's nothing that the light will affect on it anyway
hope this helps, prob not cos it's all foreign 2 me :-/

wahat brush is best .....no draw shows that ugly line at yhe top sometimes i did one using patch mesh to make a curve is that ok

Just make the brush a little bit smaller and you won't see the black line. It's caused by mip mapping when you're farther away.

Treelines are automatically considered detail by the compiler for having a transparent texture.

Hmmm, interesting. So even though they aren't green like details, they still won't create additional portals??
