get a proram called PakScape
you can get it from file front I think
make sure you put the files in the proper folders so it will work right

You don't need a pk3-file, if you didn't add new textures, scripts...
If your new map consists just of the 3 files, put the bsp into main/maps/dm (for deathmatch) and you should find it in the maps-list when you setup a new dm-game.

True you dont need it in a pk3 file if you are just testing
but if you plan to have anyone play with you they need the pk3

Well, me, I'm only building maps for our LAN-games.
Until now, it was okay just to copy the bsp-file into the maps/dm-folder of everyone who takes part, and it worked fine!
As I said, my 'work' results just in a bsp-file, no new textures or anything else. This fact makes a pk3-file in my eyes useless: Why should I put ONE file into ONE other file?
Okay, I wouldn't have to search for the maps/dm folder but just put the pk3 into the main folder, and the pk3 is zipped and therefore smaller than the bsp but I can't see any more advantages!?
I think, even if you did additional files like scripts, you wouldn't have to put them all into a pk3-file. You could put all files into their appropriate folder on everyone's machine, which surely isn't as easy as handling one pk3 and leads to more errors.

well there are 2 reason Wacko
1. size- a 10meg bsp will only be about a 2 meg pk3 file (just an aprox as it vars like most things that zip I have one 8 meg bsp that is only a 950k pk3)
2. file protection- the bsp is about a billion to one lesslikely to get courped

You are right for maps you plan for internet-gaming or even just for download!
In the beginning of this topic, there was just the question how to make a pk3-file. You gave the answer. You are right again!
I just wanted to tell ostriker, that - in case he only wants to play with some friends in a LAN and in case there are no additional files - a pk3 is not neccessary.
Okay?
I think we should close this file now.

Ok Wacko
only reason I responded back is I have seen unpacked BSP files on the web for download
and you are right if you dont plan to put it on the web and dont have a problem with HD space then you dont need to pack a bsp
now that we have covered both side well :)
I will not say anymore on the matter ok :)
