Recommend Some Mapping Things

Hi i made this post to ask people if they could recommend a room size and a wall thickness they use as i am new to maping and not sure wot size to use when hollowing out and stuff

I always make the walls 160 high and 8 thick for an average room and I think that 128 x 72 for a door is good too . the player will have to duck if the door is 96 high or less . As for room size 256x256 for a large room .

A good way to gauge is to walk around in your map in 3rd person view. In the config.cfg bind a key:
bind (key) "toggle cg_3rd_person"

And make a shortcut to the game with the cheats and other stuff enabled:
"C:\..\..\MOHAA.exe" +set developer 1 +set thereisnomonkey 1 +set cheats 1 +set ui_console 1 +set gametype 1

For the thickness of inner walls I usually use 12 units or more. In my opnion 8 looks too fragile. For outer walls I like to use 16 units or more (24, 32). It also depends on the size of the house.

Also right click in radiant, go ai, actor, it drops a box in there that is the exact same dimensions as a character in the game, so you can judge the scale of walls, doorways windows whatever against this rectangle box thing, I find it helps a LOT. ( delete the ai after you judged your scales )

There are couple ways to look at it. First off, anything less than 16 units runs your chances of 'wall clipping' much higher; that's where the player is visable/partially visable when he comes in contact with the wall. Also, 16 units is one game 'foot'. Your 512x512 grid is basically 32 feet by 32 feet square. That's a good frame of reference for building size. However, in the game world, I feel that having slightly bigger rooms 'feels' more normal. A small 8x8 room feels much smaller 'in-game' than in real life.

Anyway, use your judgement. Most outside/exterior walls are better if they are at least 16 units thick. They can be more or less, but try to think in relative terms to the environment, material construction and style of architecture you are using. ie. you won't see many 6 inch/8 unit think stone exterior walls..they're more likely to be 1 foot/16 units or more. Be smart, take your time, align and size your textures and you're already ahead of many.
