Just an Upgrade copy of XP is all it should take. The average price for it is around $95.00. Installs like a champ. I upgraded from Win98 and have had no problems what-so-ever. Try it. You will be glad you did. Although, if you can do a fresh install, you will do better. You will need a prior version of windows in CD format to validate your new copy of XP. It doesn't really matter what copy. Any will do. 95, 98, 200, ME, they should all work.

Well, if you have a Windows XP full install disk, a format of your computer now should and would be better.
*Back up any files you want/need BEFORE formating!*

If you don't have the full install and just an upgrade disk then you could go without formating.

Dont Upgrade its a bad idea ,best to get the full version and do a format and complete reinstall.
Make sure you have all drivers needed for your hardware (XP versions)
All files and stuff you like is moved tyo a seperate partition or Burnt to a CD.
Then format and reinstall.

I would also suggest you start from scratch. Format your hard drive, f-disk your hard drive, and re-install everything from scratch. When you buy WinXP Upgrade ($95), and not the full version of WinXP ($195), you don't install your old version first then WinXP. You start of with WinXP, and at some point in the early part of installation, it asks you to put your earlier version of Windows (like Win98) in the CD Rom for verification that you have an earlier version. This part last about 15 seconds. Then you remove that CD and put the other back in (WinXP) and finish the installation. It doesn't actually install any files of the older version so the UPGRADE is really the full version. And don't worry too much about your drivers (little programs that run your hardware like monitors, printers, sound and video cards). WinXP should have all of them already and will install them as necessary. If you add more hardware to your computer at a later date, you just put the WinXP CD in the drive and it will install those drivers. If you have the driver disks for these things, even better. Just in case it's not there, you've got them! And you can always go to the manufacturers website and download the newest version of the drivers you need for just about anything. Hope this helps.

P.S. The only difference between WinXP Upgrade and WinXP Full version is you don't need an earlier version for install of the WinXP Full version. They are just wanting to see any version of windows for the Upgrade.

You could just borrow a copy from a friend, not that I'm recommending it.

windows has a download also that checks to make sure your pc will support xp - some older pc's can't handle it.
