ok well i know this is a stupid question but how do u give an object a target name? do u do it by "n"?
because right now im doin the fan tut and i know how to do scripting now

yes - you select the brush or brushes and hit n. Then enter targetname where it says key and the name where it says value. hit enter and you have given the brush / brushes a targetname

Don't give worldspawn brushes a target name. It has to be turned into an entity first, like a script_object.
