Site Glitches !!

Post by Surgeon »

As you may or may not know it will be both my and .maps birthday on June 1st, so , along with Pantera, I'm redesigning the sight slightly, so if there are a few wierd glitches or colour changes please don't worry - its just me toying with ideas, creating errors or just generally sucumbing to old age....

I really love the forum, but it could use a few repairs.

1. Some forums say there is "none" using it when I am there, and I can tell others are there as well.
2. If you hit the prview button by mistake and then hit your back arrow, everything you wrote is lost. Do we really need a preview if we can edit?

3. The text is very tiny and hard on my old eyes, ha ha.

1. some people have there online status on "hide", and so have I. Dunno why really, but imho I just think it's pointless info to see whether or not someone is browing a certain forum (for hours;-). It's mostly the same few guys that actually take the time to reply to questions on a regular basis.

2. by all means, please keep the "Preview" button, I use it alot as I usually tend to make long posts and I need preview a lot. It's not the same as "Edit", since others will be able to see your post as soon as you hit "Submit" and also get the chance to reply while you are still editing your post...
(If you accidentally hit "Preview", then don't use Back but let it load and you'll see your text is still there at the bottom. To be honost with longer posts I sometimes select my text and copy to notepad, I mean it's a computer after all:)

3. it would get very fussy with a bigger fontsize, since a forum is mostly just plain text. Maybe set the monitor to 800x600 ;-)
I would change some colors though or maybe add "something" in the background. I dunno, why not a (hardly visible) MoH screenie with only green tones? Or something with a halftone-lines effect?

Because especially late at night, with white text on a rather dark background, the text seems to move and makes my eyes watery  .

well ok i was only meaning the actual site :P :P

(1) The forums have been a little screwy since I had to move the database - i've looked into it but (a) all the paths are right (b) my php isn't that good yet.....As Pantera says some people have hide - though they can't hide from the Admins (muahahahahahah !!) but thats diff to what Tltrude is talking about because it happens to me too - i just ignore it cause I know i'm there even if the forum doesn't say it :) . Its actually always happened with the phpbb2 forums (on any site i've visited) - but because they are good (and more importantly Free!)

(2) hmmm. When you click the preview button you will see a representation of what u have typed - if you scroll down you can continue to type / edit your post without having to hit the back button

ermmm... i know it's been commented on twice now, but...

why click the back button, it's never needed while previewing, and then you can re-update the preview by clicking preview again or just submit it once finished

i've just tried it now but it still kept the text anyway, mayb i'm just lucky?

even if it does delete it, you can just click forward again, and select the preview and copy and paste it back in...

one thing i will ask though, i get a run-time error on line 614 and 650 when i go 2 reply, any chance of fixes?

also i'll comment on here (not spamming but)...

i'm only holiday monday - monday so i'll miss the b/day celebrations so HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! and i'll slip 2 10th place on total posts tltrude will soon b filling my shoes at the 9th hole :P
hope this helps, prob not cos it's all foreign 2 me :-/

How's this? :)

... or not

Anyways, I have to errors whenever I click the Post Reply button, I will edit this post in a sec and tell you what they are.

Here they are
Line: 614
Error: Object expected

Line: 650
Error: Object expected

Happens when I edit and post replies. (This has always happened, not just recently)

I think you're only on the 'browsing this forum' list if you're visiting the forum for five minutes.

I don't experience any runtime errors ever :?. Maybe I'm just lucky like nuggets :).

I have no errors when I look around. I do agree that the white text on dark background makes my eyes water sometimes, though that could just be the smoke :)

I saw the logo Pantera made for you, good work, just from my point of view ( its not a criticism ) maybe he could go to work on the main banner that sits at the top of the page, its not that its bad, just am sure it could be better.

Thats what I think anyways
Philip II of Macedon sent a message to Sparta:
"If I win this war, you will be slaves forever."
The Spartan ephors sent back a one word reply: "If".

I get alot of errors to (when posting / previewing) because i have about 3 different C++ /Visual Basic compilers/progs installed on my machine..... I noticed these errors appear when i moved the forum to a different database - and i still can't figure out why they happen......the only answer I can think of is completely removing the forum and starting again (i've tried reinstalling it and nowt happens) but i don't really want to do that ......

Surg, here is what I found:

The "Object expected" error on line 614:

This line var text1=s_help.substring(0,search(s_help,"=")); in the file /forum/posting.php is causing it... its the search(s_help,"=") call that fails to be exact.

The "Object expected" error on line 650:

Same file as above.
This is a result of the error above. As the previous error causes execution of the script to abort, the variables text1 & text2 are not created.
And thus the call on line 650 ( rgb(pas,width1,height1,text1,text2) ) fails because the 2 variables have not been created...
