Why does this door do this?
When I try to open the door all it does is move back a bit?! How can I fix this?
I'm new to mapping!

is it a function>roataing door? if so make sure in the entity box the the angle is set properly play with the angles till you get used to the way they face.
And, if you want the door to open both ways do the key/value
key---alwaysaway
value-1
also, your orgin brush should be on one side touching the jamb and over lapping just a little on the door

in the Texture menu click COMMON
Once the textures load. There will be a texture called ORIGIN. It will be red.
Take that texture and make a brush that will act as the hinge

Now once you have that. Make sure its still high ligthed then right click and do the same thing again func-->Rotating door.

Now you should see this
