LOD Terrain

Ok, tried my hand at LOD terrain yesterday for the first time though I gotta say I was less than impressed with the results.
I've got a few problems but my main one is this: I followed the tutorial on this site and everything went fine, but my terrain was way too angular. Doesn't changing the triangle size make any difference to the compiled map? Increasing the triangle size makes the terrain much more smoother and rolling, but when I compile the map it reverts to the smallest triangles and ends up quite pointy. What gives?
Another thing, how come nades seem to disappear through the terrain?
