Is there any way to use an object like a switch to turn the lights on and off?

The tutorial only teachs how to make basic lights and beam lights. I'm sorry to bother you with this noob question, but I just can't find the info. Would you mind give me a link to wherever this info is?
btw: I know where the tutorials.php page is.

Thanks everybody for the links. It's still not working for me but I have to learn a lot more about scripts before attempting to figure out why it's not working. Anyway, the links were a very good starting point, txs again.
