Has anyone done films in MOHAA? If so I would like to know what probs you ran into and how you solved them... like:

Can you disable avatars?
Can you disable server messages?
And so on...

I have!
  • * Ive tried the ingame console command, which makes a sequence of images...
    * Ive tried with Capturing software...
    * Ive tried with my DV camera...
I'll get back to you on this one, with lots more of information... right now need to take my dog out for a walk, hehe

I've got video capture going fine with a card with video out, so tats not the prob:

I want to know the little details on how to do neat tricks to make the video capture good... like removing avatars and texts and compasses to be able to use the spectator mode for swooping in the camera and stuff :)

Ok here I go! :D (took me awhile to go through my bookmarks, phuh...)
I've noticed that your reformed question a bit, so I make this a larger post, this information might be usefull for others out there

There's three different options on how to make your Demo/Video. (that i know of)
  • 1. There's an ingame console command which will create a .tga sequence, allthough this will lower your FPS, so i wouldn't recommend it

    Code: Select all

cl_avidemo 1 (to turn it on)
    cl_avidemo 0 (to turn off)
The easiest way is to bind 2 keys for these...
  • 2. You can use screencapturing program like Camstasiaor Fraps, which will capture your screen while playing. One problem though, you'll have to play in 800x600 and your fps will be less then 10, yuk! :P
Someone mentioned something about Vdubwhich will have no effect on your fps, but i havent tried it out.
  • 3. This is the best and probably the most expensive one..
If you got a DV camera you can connect that to your TV-out card and record straight from your computer... no lag :D
Afterward you can edit your movie in Adobe Premiere ($800) or such... best quality!
Usefull Console Commands

Code: Select all

bind INS "toggle fps" //self-explanatory
bind DEL "toggle cg_lagometer" //toggles compass on & off
bind END "hudoff" //monitors your frames per second
How to get rid of the "Press fire to join" message when in spectator mode?

This only works serverside so you wont be able to take it off if you dont know the person who runs the server. Although if you're running your own server (wanna make a cool demo of your new map) you can edit the 'Localization.txt' file. The best way is to create a folder and name it 'global', put this folder into your Main folder. Next step is to get the 'Localization.txt' file from your 'Pak0.pk3' . Put this into your 'global' folder. Okay so far so good...
Now open 'Localization.txt' in your texteditor and search for "Press fire to join". You'll find two (2) lines of the same and it will look something like this:

Code: Select all

{ "Press fire to join the battle!" "Press fire to join the battle!"}
Now what you have to do is to change the second line, which is the right one. Delete it and leave the ""
It would look like this:

Code: Select all

{ "Press fire to join the battle!" ""}
Thats it! Start your server and nothing will apear when in Spectate mode.

I asked Michael (aka. |*| S O C |*| Lucky Luciano) at www.element93.com, and he gave me this nice little pk3. Just pop it into your main and it will remove all avatars ( remove the pk3 to get them back ).

After trying your advice I found some minor errors:
hudoff does not work, what you want is ui_hud 0 ( undo with ui_hud 1 ) to remove the H.U.D.
You must repalce the "Press fire to join the battle!" with " " ( with a space character ), else it will be ignored and the default used ( thats "Press fire to join the battle!" ).

The rest is great.

I made a tutorial in MOH:AA film making, here it is.

the links at the bottom of your tut page are not correct.

I have used the cl_aviddemo command myself. Works alright if your pc can handle the load. I am lucky enough that my frame rates fall to about 22 fps.

Also this program make a great litte avi out of the tga squences:

Quake Video Maker.

which can be downloaded here: http://www.swift-tools.com/Quake/QVM

You may also have to download the codecs also. I have several that help read a wide variety of video files.

Hopefully by fall I will have a little working Mohaa film myself.

I think little movies would be great for new map releases from mappers.

Good work finding all the info.

Hehe.. i forgot about that one...
Thanks for mentioning it, I've tried that myself, but being on a server with 20+ gamers it can be a bit laggy, but depends if you're hosting or not...
Myself, i use the DVcam option always, simple, best quality and no lag.

thanks D.Eagle
