Roofs
Having trouble with roofs
i know how to do the l shaped roof but what about the roofs that you find on houses or sniping towers the ones that rise to a point from all sides

Something i learned about clipping, im sure most of you know
Oh just a hint for you on clipping (i learned this myself just recently)... clipping can be a pain in the ass, sometimes when you clip it clips the wrong side, and you have to reclip.... so here is the hint. It always clips on the left side of the line, number 1 point is the back, number 2 point is the front, and the left side dissapears. so when you clip, remember that, and it will save you alot of trouble.

I don't like to clip either nor use the 'v' dragging on roofs. The best bet in clipping is to build at an exact 16 unit grid so that your are dimensionally aligned, then when you click for the clip points they should line up nicely for you...any other grid size can get tricky.
What I do is use the 'e' key once I highlight the roof-to-be-brush. Just drag the edges in to the top...works to make multi-sided roofs too....AND much safer than using the vertice edit (v) as it can sometimes really screw up if you are not perfect with it...... just my thoughts.

ok ok ok... where exactly are you having the problem???
if it's in the /\ area on the wall, then clipping is your answer, of just make a five sided brush
if it's on the roof // that bit and \\ that bit, then use "E", to modify the edges, and "R" to rotate it

Clipping is a great tool... you can basically create any brush you want with it. The only rule-of-thumb I stick to, with clipping, is maintaining an even ratio of what I clip, on the grid.
I try to go 2 x 2 to get a perfect 90 degree angle, or if that doesn't suit what I'm doing, and I want more of a steeple effect, I go 2 x 4 or 2 x 6. Just maintain that ratio on all sides, and you get a perfect steeple. Then, if you want, you can hollow the brush, which is normally frowned upon because it overlaps brushes... but on a clipped brush you tend to not run into the overlapping as often.
I hollow brushes all the time, then manipulate the sides so they don't overlap... rather than make the buildings one wall at a time... it's a nice little shortcut.
