FPS

Post by Sideways »

This has probably already been addressed many times, but I'm new to the forum, and still an amateur mapper.

The maps I have made seem to suffer from framerate problems. My one map "The Facility" (www.ta-force.com) had a HORRIBLE FPS, because I wasn't caulking un-used surfaces. My latest map "Algiers Strike" (www.ta-force.com) I caulked every unseen texture, used as few brushes as possible, and still the framerate doesn't seem all that good.

Anyone have any other suggestions for keeping framerate down? Is caulking the best method, or is applying the 'notext' texture better?

Thanks in advance for any help.

first of all, change ur video settings so it plays well with the normal SP maps.

tell me the structure ofyour map. did you make a huge box surrounding it or something? do you have lots of models?

I think you mean "nodraw". That is used for the back and sides of brushes that have see-through textures. Caulk is for brush faces that no one will ever see. Using it reduces the number of faces the game has to draw. And, lowering the face count improves the preformance (FPS) of your map.

FPS is all in the design of your map. If there are large open spaces with lots of brushes, trees, and other models, it will go down. Adding walls and bends in hallways will make it go up because the player can't see everything at one time.

After you get it as low as you can, study the use of hint brushes and vis_leafgroups.

well, I do have one large open space in the map, which has a fair amount of objects (bushes, trees, etc...) so that could be one reason. The map itself isn't very large.. there is a large box surrounding it for the sky... probably larger than it needs to be, but I never thought that would also reduce the FPS...

I was thinking of revising the map anyways. I was going to shrink the courtyard area, which is the largest open area on the map, and I was also going to get rid of a few hallways that no one ever seems to play in.

Thanks for the info. If you want to check out the map, and offer suggestions based on what you see in-game, download it from our downloads section at:
