LOD Black spots..

Hi, I've made a road with a bank either side made out of LOD terrain but I can see black areas as I move towards certain bits. I found out that it's because it's too near the surface above it (please correct me if I'm wrong). So I lowered the bits where I thought the black spots were so they were roughly 64 units below the ground and tested it. They were gone but now there are bigger patches over the road.
Any ideas? Is there a good way to avoid this?
Thanks.

when you say bigger patches you mean more black spots?

try lowering those parts too.

also, try going to the advanced menu, and putting terrain detail on 'max' or whatever the highest is. when you get farther away from something, it usually is drawn with less polygons to save some fps. the amount of polygons that it draws, is based on your terrain detail.

Yeah, I had this problem. It is DEFINITELY coz the LOD shifts as you move away and brings out parts of the texture that were beneath the road when the map was lit. As Alocholic said, changing all the facets to Max. detail should solve your problem.

ok thx for the advice, ill see if it works after it does its customary 10 minute compile :? . Anyone know why it takes so long? Is it just 'cos its a fairly big outside map?

well, that got rid of some of it but theres still black bits. I'm gonna try making the terrain a different way; start with the terrain miles below the ground then just pull the bits up that I want...see if that works.
