problem texturing LOD

Post by nx »

hi
this is my first post here so...
first of all, keep up the awesome work .map team  and glad to start mappin 4 mohaa :D :D

my problem: i have a big lod (load from image) but now i want to texture it and... i can only apply the text to the all terrain or to smal pieces of it (maybe its 512x512, right?), anyway, those small pieces don't solve my problem. can i aplly text to individual triangles?
i want a river and in some parts its surrounded by hills and i want to aplly different texts to the margins of the river, top of the hill, etc.
any idea? :?

Lo nx, welcome to .Map

The smallest piece of individual LoD terrain that can be textured is 512 x 512. However ther are ways around your problem. You could use patch meshes to replace parts of you lod terrain where you need the textures to change (remember you can delete individual faces of LoD terrain)

thx for the reply Surgeon. i suppose i can use patch meshes (i used that for a road) but..
1- i only used them in a horizontal perspective, that is i put the patch mesh under lod brush and brought some of the vertices that i wanted under the patch mesh so that the patch could be revealed (i don't know if i'm making myself clear...). that measn that i don't have to delete traingles, right? what i have to make sure is that the patch is above the lod
but can i put a patch inside the lod? r u saying to put the patch under the lod?

i mean, what i want is to texture the margin so that the texture changes in the river/water line. the margin has some irregularities (horizontal perspective = hills; vertical perspective= i dont know the name, the margin isn't a right line). and patch are always right surfaces, no irregularities.

by the way, Major when i don't understand i try to find the right tutorials but thanks VERY much for the warning :)
the problem is that i didin't found a tutorial for this

An idea that i have, but have not tried to implement is to place two or more identical LOD pieces at the same place and with help of facet flags delete the facets of one LOD where you would want the texture from the other to appear. and then delete the the part not to be seen on the second LOD. That way you should be able to texture parts of a LOD piece. But as I said, I have not tried it.

Do tell me if you tried it and it did work.

Good luck

You can drag down the verticies of the LOD Terrain too, just like you did for the patch mesh. Highlight the terrain and hit key V. Making good terrain is almost an artform and it take practice to make it look good in the game. There is a terrain manual in the MOHTools/docs folder.
