Cliff with bunker protruding

Hi, I'm tryin to make a fairly steep cliff, not too much of a problem, however, I want a bunker to stick out of it approximately half way up. Unless I've missed something, only LOD terrain lets you delete little bits of it to make a hole for my bunker. The problem is, LOD doesn't really go steep enough for my cliff (yellow vertices).

Is there a way to cut a hole in a mesh?
Or maybe a totally different way to do this altogether?
Thanks.

Maybe you'll have to use brush based terrain on certain parts. Try to use as little as possible though, since brush terrain is often really bad for fps.

You could also use patch meshes but I find the lighting doesn't look very well on large meshes. You cannot make holes in patch meshes.

I've opted for LOD but I'm just experimenting to see how steep I can get it to go without the dreaded yellow vertices.

You could try using the LOD terrain, and building in sections. Make one 512x512 piece of LOD, and adjust 1 corner only UP about 384 grid.
Then build another piece of LOD at the low height of the original piece.
Then snap them together.
You will end up with a nearly vertical piece of terrain between the two sections.
The only problem with this method, is that you will need to play around with height differentials because the vertical section will be made of stretched polys, which, when deleted, could leave a rather large opening.

But with a little practice, this way could work for you.

yeah, ive got to go near vertical, but theres no vertices on the cliffside so deleting, as you say, will leave nothing.
It's gotta be possible...somehow...

Ok, well I've got as vertical as I want it, anyone know a good way of making it look natural cos at the moment its just a big slope?

as far as textures go... try typing in rock wall in the texture search box

im using ctrckset1_1 as my texture, looks alright. It's just the shape that looks bad.

There is another way to go - you could use patch meshes for your cliff face - theres a tutorial over @ Manstiens place - links in the link section - too lazy to look...

I think i know the one your talkin about, but I need to cut that hole out of the cliff face remember, as far as I'm aware, that can't be done with meshes. Anyway, I think I've cracked it, I'm just gonna compile and look in game, ill show u a pic if it looks decent.

Just make your bunker and then build the meshes up and around it, like papier mache - just don't put a mesh where your bunker is - simple.
Mansteins tutorial is excellent for making cliffs etc.
