All monitors constantly refresh at whatever Hz you set it to. What you described sounds like it went into power saving mode.
To check do this:
(1)Right click on your background.
(2)Properties
(3)Screensaver
(4)Then power at the bottom.
You should now see how the monitor is scheduled to "sleep".

If it's not the 'sleep'-mode thingie, then you should try and turn up or down your refresh-rate, most of the time you should turn up the rate bit by bit, start at 60 Hz, most screens work okay at 72 Hz.
When your screen stops flickering, that's the refresh rate for u!
Keep in mind not to turn it up too high, it might damage your monitor!

eh.. Xp is designed for 60Hz only, but you can force it to go up by special applications made by your gfxcard manufacturer... go there and look for a 'refresh rate' fix! M$ never put that in XP, so whatever u change in the 'normal' display settings for 'Hz' wont work.

Hey I got a question. I have a geforce2 mx. I get ~10-20 fps playing bf42 (less than 1 in the heat of battle

) If I make the refresh rate higher, would it just work my video card harder, or would it give better fps?

Neither, it would make the screen 'smoother' by reducing the flickering. So set your monitor refresh rate high as possible.

I feel sorry for your eyes

60 Hz at a 17 inch screen is really painful.
