Treelines help

I've got my map in a sky box and it looks good. I want to add a treeline texture. So I made a brush and put the texture on it and I made the brush slightly taller than the top of my sky box. When I run the game trees and sky look ok but I can't get rid of that line where the treeline brush and sky brush meet. Can you get rid of this? Maybee not. If not whats a good way to make a tree line on the edges of your map. Sorry if this was posted before. I try to read all the threads but man this forum must have a million of them. Thanks.

Make your treeline 1 unit thick, and use caulk on all the sides, but not the front...(which the player sees)

I'm glad you brought this up. Thats one thing I don't understand. You say to use caulk on all the sides but not in the front. How do you give the sides and front different textures, caulk being one and the treeline being the other. When I give a texture to a brush all the sides front and back have that texture. Like I'll make the brush caulk texture and the I select it and give it the treeline texture. and the whole brush turns to treeline. What am I missing is there some command so you can give each side a different texture. You would't hollow it out, or would you??

Nothing should go out side your skybox, and to select just one face of the brush so that you can have your trees on only that one face, hold down shift+CTRL then left click with your mouse on the face you want to select, should make things much easier for you.

Argh use common/nodraw instead of caulk!
Making the line 1 unit thick really isn't necessary, just very annoying as you have to switch to grid 1 whenever you want to make a change

Why is it better to use nodraw than caulk, jv?
BTW...u can set the grid to 1 by pressing 1 (simple hey?

)

Man all you guys are awesome. I kinda knew not to go out of the sky box, but with me everything is trial and error. I wish they had a manual on this sdk but it would probley be thick as a phone book lol. Special thanks to (Spec Ops) Jack Ruby. You answered a question of mine I had since I started using this tool. Shift+Ctrl wow! Now I got a cool treeline with no lines! cool! jv_map I did use caulk and it worked too!! Thanks for your help guys! I'm sure you"ll hear from me more.

Heres another one for ya, I made my terrian in easygen, so it divided the ground into many triangle brushes, which I textured. Now I was wondering if there is a way to smooth some of the sharp triangle brushes, like the ones that form the top of a cliff or top of a river bank? I notice when I play MOH like the edges of their river banks are so rounded and smooth. Would it be like bending a brush? Man that would be a lot of work. After messing with this sdk I got a whole new resepct for all you maper dudes.

Your welcome dude!
And for your problem:
Select your LOD Terrain. Press 'V' to see that pink squares are popping op on the edges of the triangles. Ok, go to the side which should be the upper side of the mountain. Now press SHIFT+LMB to select the whole line of squares (a bit tricky, but it should work). You'll see that the line of squares has turned black. Now move the blocks up. Ok, select the rest of the lines after you're done. If you have done it all, there should be a mountain. I hope, I explained it as clear as possible

Because fence masks only work when you use nodraw or common/fence, and because caulk is solid.
This means if you use caulk you can't shoot
over the treeline, whereas you can do that when using nodraw or fence. Also caulk generates a solid volume which you really don't need.
If you use caulk you'll get an error when compiling saying you should use nodraw or fence instead

Yes this makes since Major Pain. Thanks again. Also I see what your saying jv_map. I got another question (of course) In the enity list theres a large waterfall. What do you got to do to animate this is it by putting information in the key and value boxes? Or is it somthing you script. Oh yeah I put fog in my map!! very cool!! I saw a tut on pulseating fog I"ll have to check it out. I know some of my questions are lame but I"ll learn! It's like I want to learn everything at once. (Hope my head don't explode). One more thing also in the enity list I notice some u-boat stuff like the conning tower for instance, when I click on this I get a dark red cube in the 3d window no matter how close I view it. If you compile will it be a conning tower? Thanks again guys!!!!!!!

Yes, the radiant can't find the proper model to project into the program...but MOHAA itself does, so there will be a conning tower!
And about the waterfall...search the internet for test_door. It contains a small waterfall...you can see how it's done...
Check the modtheater forums, because this subject was there too

another way to do treelines is to create a patch. you can actually shape a patch to look more realistic and can also give your treeline a deeper feel and look. you can raise and lower a patch to make a section of trees to look shorter or taller than the rest and not look like they go in a straight line.
and with a patch you don't have to worry about applying different textures like "nodraw" or "fence" , patches only have one face to apply a texture.
Here are some screenies of what i am talking about.

and when you add trees with your treeline, it gives it a natural look.
hope it helps.
