Ladder Quirk!!

Post by General_DisArray »

first off let me say I HATE LADDERS!!!!!. i have had a huge problem with one of my ladders.

you can get down from the top. you can get on it from the bottom but when going up there is one spot right at the top you get stuck. to get up and off of the ladder at the place where you stick, you have to look to the left or right then you can get off. what the hell could be causing this?

there is nothing in the way to stop you, i have turned off all filters and there is nothing but the ground in front of you.

oh yeah, FYI, the exit for the top of a ladder has to have open ground. you cannot have it go up a wall and then expect it to exit properly. i played with that for days to get it to work. but had to reposition my ladders so they exited to an open spot of at least 20 or 30 world units.
i was even using a tutorial i found on Nemesis or something like that.
so if anyone is writing a tutorial, please add this b/c that was never clear.

A screenshot in the mohr would help greatly :)

Its all dependent on the ladder brush.

um, i don't have a way of showing pix. i can email them to you.

also, it shouldn't matter that i have cut a hole in my LOD terrain? it should work regardless, as long as i am not colliding with the terrain, right?[/img]

The area above the ladde need to be quite high, mush higher then the player seems to need. If there is anything above the ladder try removing it to see if that is what stops you from getting of the ladder.

You also need to thing about what is behind you you need about a 64 unit square hole to climb up through . I think it that big a hole from ladder brush to edge behind you .

The 'ladder' function brush just needs to be 8-16 units taller than your physical ladder rungs. That will make enough room to get off of it. But be sure that any holes are large enough to fit through as stated above, and be sure to give the player enough head room to climb to the top and get off of the ladder.

the ladder works fine, i can go up and get down quite regularly, it is just when i go up the ladder i get stuck at one particular spot. i won't move unless i look left or right then i can get up and off the ladder.

when i am at the top of the ladder i have no prob. gettting down. and when at the bottom i have no problem getting back up.

oh yeah, Bjarne BZR, thanks for the link for the ladder link, i use this one all the time. it works like a charm, but this one is just mind boggling.

oh well, i must have something small like a brush or piece of terrain blocking the player. i will keep looking and update you guys when i figure this problem out.

thanks 2 all!!

I see three things:

(1) Its very important that the ladder brush does not touch any other brush/lod/patch mesh.....basicly no other enitities.
(2) Remove that ladder brush at the top of the ladder.
(3) Your ladder brush looks extremely think. I make mine 1-3 units thick and never have a problem. I dont know if being too thick makes a difference though.

You can also run the console while you approach the ladder and try to climb it. See if it gives you an error msg when doing so.

See a picture is worth a 1000 words :)

on your second point, i read on another tutorial that this is a way to get ladders to work and they have worked really well for me.

i will try your 1 and 3 first then go on the 2.

thanks.

I have never used the top ladder brush and have never had a prob....He might have had other probs and that worked for him but if you do it right you only need one ladder brush.

If you look at EA's standard maps they use two though....wonder why?

alright, i am going through this problem one step at a time. i took everything out that surrounded the ladder. it worked without a hitch. now i am slowly adding things back in to see what exaclty is the problem!
