Custom City Skylines for Skybox Walls

Post by silversound »

Is it possible to make a city skyline texture that you can apply to your skybox? I imagine you would have to creat a texture much like the stock treelines, and use a similar method to get the see through effect.

I know most people just build several boxes and texture them as buildings, then block them off from the player. While that looks really nice and has a 3d effect, I don't have room on the grid. Not to mention that my view has to cover far too much area to remain practical.

Any tips or advice?

Make a panoramic view of the sky line and make sure the ends meet properly so that it looks natural. Then chop it up into 4 peices for N E W S. As for the sky if you are gonna use clouds that may be tricky, i would create cloudy sky in a program i use called Terragen then copy the buildings onto it and make adjustments till it looks right. Sorry i cant be more specific than that but its a start.

You can't make it exactly like a treeline texture . Textures with transparency are not use in the vis stage of compileing the map would leak if you used that kind of texture . You can make a sky line texture but you have to draw the sky too . or make a skyline texture and use it like a treeline and put it inside the skybox .
