Fence Option When Texturing

What exactly does the fence option do. It is available as an option while texturing. I have way to much fence and I am looking for any options I can get to optimise performance.

Fence is used for textures with multiple surface types, a solid part and a notsolid part. For instance use for fences :wink: , foliages and windows.
