Use lod for your first few maps, but eventually you should give the patchmesh method a try. Culture says that it should yield better results for fps if done correctly though maby not texturing? Opinions?

hehe im familiar enough w/ LOD, but it only goes 512 units (i think) i need something higher. how would u make a mountain out of a patch mesh?

The next tutorial after the first mesh tut was to be about that stuff, but I havent done it yet...

Manstein's leveldesign has a tutorial on outside maps that contain patchmesh cliffs. Go there.

smartai, a patch mes when u vertex edit only has 8 choices, unlike LOD. and u cant load meshes from pictures, so it would be a little hard to use it like LOD eh :D

yes and no, you can move it up and down like LOD but you can move the verticies about the XY axies unlike LOD. I say thats the big difference. Oh and you can make LOD higher than 512 thats the biggest height difference between verticies you can have. You just have to raise the verticies around it up.

First off...I would like to say hello to my old friend Surgeon. Hello!!!! To answer your ? good sir the best way to make mountains is a Proggie called Gensurf...its very ez to use. MOHAA Radient will detect it as a plugin. A patch mesh is ok but it still uses too many resources in game. (Laggy)..Gensurf does all the work for you.

If i may be so bold as to offer yet another method to create mountains. First thing i will assume is that this mountain will be visible from just about everywhere on the map, second being visible from averywhere on the map we may want to consider keeping the face count of the mountains low so that it will reduce the impact of fps, third to do this i propose that you use a simpler method and that is regular brushes.

With Lod you have height limitations to the angle at which you can use it to create steep mountain like terrain.

Terrrain can produce wierd texture effects as it tries to bend and mold to the surface.

With brushes you can keep face count low and fps up, texture quality high and still create a very nice looking mountain. Some of the best mountains i have seen in custom maps are the ones that let the textures do the work not the brushes.

As you can see there are several methods being offered here so you will have to decide what method works best for the effect you are tryin to produce.

Thanks hope this helps.

Can't u just use LOD and attach sections of 512 together?

Go here and check out LOD terrain.
