Another "Can You" Question?

So if you made two versions of the same map that were identical in every way except:
Version 1 made with all standard textures
Version 2 made using all custom textures
Otherwise identical, would thay be able to run together at the same time on seperate machines during multiplayer?
I ask because I want to get really crazy with custom textures, however I would like to have people choose between a very large download, and a very small one depending on their connection and machine capabilities.
Yes

Yes you can do that, as long as both maps had the same name. However, the custom one will probably take longer to load for the first game.

Yes that will work since textures aren't sent over the connection as long as they are preciselly the same name and such.

I think the textures have to have the same name. And you can only "map" your map once. If you texture a wall with "text1.jpg", save and then texture again with "text2.jpg", save and make the pk3, the bsp will be different. Texture the wall with "text1.jpg", save, compile and just put different jpg files on the pk3.
And you have to texture using the standard textures. Then make your custom textures with the same name of mohaa textures....

Sounds like you're going to create a LOT of headaches for yourself with two texture sets as I'm also pretty certain that they would all have to share the same file name and be in the same exact location or your .bsp files will not match. I'd just be smart about new textures and use them well and pack them up anyway. IF you're really worried about 56k users, you can always pull the /texture folder out of the pk3 and have a split DL for folks, just be sure to explain how to configure the pk3s afterward. Generally, most guys would rather have new testures as long as they are appropriate to the map/theme and are well done. Crap is never welcome so be smart about using them and don't go nuts for the sake of having new textures. If they're good ones, other guys will/should ask you to use them.

lol if they cant download your map than they shouldnt be playing MOHAA online in the first place. i wouldnt worry about 56k users, there anrent many, and the ones that have 56k and play MOHAA prolly dont play online anyway

as far as ur ?, what u would probably have to do is make your custom textures the same name as the default ones, which actually wouldnt be that hard if you knew the names. i wouldnt re-map it with the textures, just throw them in one of the pk3's and viola. one thing though, if u re-name the default ones, then in stock maps the testures are gonna be all different, that wouldnt be to cool would it

. id say too much to botehr with, but if u wanted to im sure you could.
Disagree

I disagree with everyone. The texture names do not have to be the same. The game loads textures that are listed in the bsp file. So, if the players download different versions of the bsp file, with the same name, both will connect to the sever and load their own textures.

So is just the name? 2 different bsp with different names can connect players?

No you must have the exact same .bsp on all computers to play or at least name wise.

hmm. i dunno cuz the bsp's wil be different, and so will the lighting. the light reflects differently off different textures. i gotta test this out myself.
