Farplane_cull 2 ?

I am using the flughafen worldspawn settings and I see it has farplane_cull 2, what does this do, cull 1 as far as I know culls everything outside the farplane distance which makes for pop up structures.
I never noticed anything about 2 before.
Also with vis_derived 1 will area portals and hints work ?
