if i wanna light up a big room without putting a whole bunch a lights in....i apply the radan light thing

To apply worldspawn settings you need to select one of your sky brushes then hit N.
You should then apply some ambient light

If you don't have a skybox, any wall will do. No need for suncolor if you don't have one. Ambientlight will brighten your shadows--7 7 7 is still pretty dark, but not black.
