Vis leaf group: Hands On. (By Bjarne)
http://www.planetmedalofhonor.com/rjuka ... group.html

Basic Rule (By tltrude)
The basic rule is, when you stand in a vis_leafgroup, the vis_leafgroups it targets can not be visible. So, you can put them underground, just not near the exits. The ones underground can then target the one (or more) above. The underground ones can also target eachother, if one is not visible form the other.

Key: target
Value: outside_vis tunnel1_vis tunnel3_vis

Detailed brush and regular brush: (By tltrude)
It takes less time to compile the map if some of the brushes are detail brushes (look green in 2d view). Just making steps and ramps detail will cut the compile time by hours.

The hot key is Ctrl + Shift + D. You can filter out detail brushes with hot key Ctrl + D. Don't go crazy and make everything detail.

Exactly what tltrude said, whenever you have brushes in your map that dont need to be used to obstruct a view of another part of the map ie stairs, trim around doors, small boxes and such you can make these detail. Take a look at the vis_leafgroups tut on this site, and also check out the "vis for dummies" by the storm (link at the top of the vis_leafgroups tut page). That will help explain most of it.

You need to use a console command,

r_showtris 2

this should show everything that is being drawn.

Nice data mining Yarik.
Just on thing: The "Detailed vs Structural (by nemesis)" tutorial contains a lot of errors and will probably make more harm than good to a beginning mapper, so I suggest removing that one from the list. ( Sorry Nemesis :) )
