texture problem with screen redraw?

Hi,

Can anyone help with this one?

I have two exactly the same buildings and in the same map, but have textured the insides differently in order to choose which one looks best.
But there seems to be a problem with the in game refresh rates whilst using this texture:

algiers/rdr_algierset_1cnd

What happens is when i am looking at a door and moving the mouse around the door frame refreshses really badly and makes the frame look like it is "shimmering". I appreciate that there will be redraw when moving about but this seems too excessive?

It doesnt do this on my building textured with general_structure/bunker_wall, which is very strange.

I am pretty sure that i havent got any bad brushes as it does the shimmering effect on all doors, it has compiled ok and my 3d card doesnt have any problems. Therefore it must be something to do with this texture,i want to use this one as it looks good for what i am doing - what do think?

I have taken a screen shot but it doesnt show what i am describing, so havent bothered to post it.

Thanks for th the help.

From your description it sounds like Z-fighting. Thats when you have 2 brush faces at the same place and with different textures. MOH:AA won't know what texture to draw so the 2 textures will "fight" for the place and caus flickering...

Thanks for the reply,

Ok, is there anyway to overcome this? - as i would like to use this set of textures. If not, then i will just use my other textured building which seems to be ok.

Thanks.

Well, yes it this is the problem you are having, you have double brushes in the same place. Delete one of them and you will be set. Maby you did 2 copies when you copied your building?

If you dont have double brushes, you have a different problem.

Does it look like this?

Image

I had this problem with a few doors and it turned out to be the frame. After I re-caulked all the non-visible faces around the doors, the problem went away. My doors all had area brushes in them, and for some reason they would show through, or move, because of the lack of caulk faces.

Hi, thanks for the help.

I have tried the stuff you have suggested but it still doesnt make any difference - there were no duplicate brushes and the hidden faces were caulked.

It is a shame as this texture looked good, but because of my problems i have reverted to another and now it seems to be ok.

Thanks once again.

Hi Bjarne BZR

I cant to seem to post a image for some reason - but if you follow the link to my web site a screen shot can be found there.

Unfortunately it doesnt show anything at all regarding my texture problem, as taking a screen shot whilst moving the mouse did not pick up the "shimmering" effect. But you are more than welcome to have a look if you like, the problem i am having is the door frame side against the white wall - its the door frame that "shimmers" whilst moving around in the game...

Thanks for your help

Ahhh... the door frame. That is the "general_industrial/deckgrate_set1b" texture if meine augen mich nich zu gel?gen ( I got a grade of 1 out of 5 in the easiest Geman class in school ).

It is known to flicker. For me this happens when I use that texture and then manipulate it, getting the brushes to no longer be perfectly aligned on the grid... select the door and frame and select "Selection -> Snap points to grid" from the menu. That may work...

Hi,

The textures i used for this room are as follows:

Door frame: normandy/bunk_beam
walls: algiers/rdr_algierset_1cnd

I have tried snapping the frame to the grid but it still didnt work? I have also tried deleting the brushes

and making a new frame with and without mitred conrners - but still it "shimmers"?

What do you reckon?

Cheers.

I don't find anything wrong with this MAP file... And it works like a charm when I run the BSP file you sent me...

Have you installed the latest drivers for your Gfx card? It's really the only reason for your error I can dream up....

Hi Bjarne BZR.

Thank you for looking at my map and confirming it was ok - Much appreciated.

I thought my 3D card was ok / this is what i am using at the minute:

NVidia GeForce4 MX 440 (64mb)
drivers 45.23

I know the drivers are a bit out of date, but they are very stable so i left them alone. With these i have had no game crashes or performance slow downs.

But two days ago i decided to install the latest driver set 56.72 and i had all sorts of problems: games running slowly crashes etc. Anyway i rolled back to the 45.23 version and then things were ok again.

The only thing i can think of that caused the problems is that i forgot to turn of my virus checker whilst installing the new drivers.

Therfore i will have another go and let you know how i get on

Thanks,

Sparky
