The Pros and Cons of computers

Well, after being 'connected' with my computer these past years, i have noticed some changes in myself... first off:

Pros:
-----
-I think my hand-eye coordination has improved ;) :D
-My Typing/spelling skills have excelled greatly
-Perhaps smarter? The internet has many resources and information for anyone!
-Understanding skills have improved... i guess... Well, talking with people around the world gives you different perspectives of everything that is going on and you learn to understand things differently and not having the media (which is biased towards the 'good') and practically mind-warping you into believing in THEIR 'goods' and THEIR 'bads'...
-I learned that people around the world can get along just fine! i mean seriously, look at us here at .map! We are all from different parts of the world and converse as if we were next-door neighbors at a barb-a-que get-together :D
-Designing/Gfx/Architectural skills have improved.. mapping for moh:aa teaches you lots of different things! Every building i look at now, i try and think of a way to generate and re-create it in MohRadiant!!!

Cons:
------
-Im addicted... I chose computer over some of the parties i am invited to.. not just parties, other things to! its a knock-down on the Social Ladder!
-Eyes. My god. before i started using the computer on a frequent basis, i had perfice 20/20 vision in both eyes... but now, i have 60/20 in my right eye and about 30/20 in my left. Ouch. I loved my eyes!
-I start to use 'nerd' phrases when im around people, because i have learned more about computers, i tend to use 'big' words and 'numbers' along with them that makes me sound like a nerd.. hehe.
-Tired. Staying up late on the computer only to get a few hours of sleep can be a no-no. Im tired a lot now!
-Detached from Family. hehe, this can go along with the 'addicted' part to, but this is family not friends. but im not OVERLY addicted, just enough where whenever families visit they always have to come when im on the computer, making them think that i am on it 24/7 (which im not)... I dont do much with majority of my family anymore... like cool stuff that is :P.

Ya, how about you guys hehe.

One major subject that is a pro and a con.

Information

You can get information on almost anything. examples of both are construction and bombs.

Good and evil in one.

well, as for eyes, i've posted before about this but i've had 20/20 vision with pinpoint accuracy since i've been born. i've started on computers when i was around 6-7 and have been gaming and designing ever since on a CRT monitor.

i'll use my past example of being able to see indivdual snowflakes fall at 20+ ft.

well, my mom has a job that has her going all over the state and my parents are divorced so i'm kind of already detached from family. but im not obsessive about comps, i love games and designing on them but not to the point of doing so ignoring times when friends and family are around.

as for staying up late, yes, that's me. but i'm a realy bad early bird so it's not so bad.

 i still use hunt and peck but i'm faster than most anyone i know using the homerow method.

ya, hand-eye coordination is much improved. i know someone who can't really catch a small racquetball without fumbling who is noy usually challenged physically (like baseball) and doesn't do computer stuff and only gets worse.

and, games in particular, improve your perception. what i mean is depth perception. changing the way you think by changing the camera mode (ie sideways instead of behind) makes the person think and improves their calculation for that way of movement.

i could go on and on but ill stop now.

Yeah, I'll have to aggree with a lot of the stuff in the first post.

About typing, I can type pretty dadgum fast, not like 100 words/min but maybe like 50 or maybe 60 words a minute. The higher end if I already know what to type, like looking of a sheet, but like I am typing now, I wouldn't say I'm typing nearly as fast.

btw, my dad does a wierd combo of both the hunt & peck and homerow technique. And then he tries to smash the keyboard I think sometimes...

I've been on the pc for 20 years, wrote my first basic program in 1978 with a Texas Instraments computer you hook up to the TV. So I don't know about con's.

One is I guess my wife is pissed off cause im always on the pc, but she's come to accept that. I got her one now she's on it every nite.

Pro's:
  • My eye site is still 20/20
  • My IQ has improved
  • It's helped me at work, big time.
  • Provided hobbies and interest
Con's:
  • My ass is flatter
  • I might have carpal tunnel.
  • People think Im a geek, thier probly right.
  • I spend 45$ a month on a high speed connection.
:?

so? youv got a wife, who needs a poofy ass?

what's wrong with being geek? people don't like smarter than them because they know that they could be better.

carpal tunnel is the only thing i see that could be a major problem and easily corrected. just adjust yer position for yer hands and soon it'll go away i believe. there are numerous seminars around the world that can ehlp you with that.

i see very little downsides that cannot be corrected with comps.

Yeah I think I may have a bit of carpal's, sometimes when I've been typing a bunch my, I think, left wrist hurts if I go out of the normal position.

My mom's got it too, she's been on computers since way back when...

oh, and another thing.

repetitive motion syndrome (i think it's syndrome...)

which i belive is just as easily corrected as carpel tunnel, maybe i should say prevented.
for those of you not yet aware of this quasi-real condition, some people have especially weak or vulnerable wrists or other joints. besides the obvious outcomes of arthritis, they complain that when they sit dow to type or do something not invlolving their entire body (like lifting, back shoulder hands) they get serious cramps and enventually they say those cramps are so debilitating that they can't move that hand.

i personally think thats a special case or an elaborate fraud. i've been whiling away my childhood on ps2, nintendo, comp, etc. (i do get sunlight every now and then.... ) and my fingers are still fine.

i think most of the physical problems, besides atrophy (probably not spelled right) are either due to weak or unstable condition (ie your eyes were blackened a lot as a child) or you're just careless.

whew i probably get a lot of enemies in this forum i post so long and commonly.

haha, nice work hogleg! ;)

But anyhoo, my typing skills are very good, id say. i can type about 70 wpm on average, but usually i go around 50 wpm cuz i have no reason to hurry. Today in school i reached 120 on a Wpm test. Oofta. that was crazy...

Well, basically the main reason i turned to the computer when i was a young lad was because of being bored.... When you live in a town of a population of 1000.. yes, thats right, just a grand, and the nearest BIG city being 6 hours away... theres not much to do during the summertime. We have a 1screen movie theater, and soon we are getting a McDonalds! YAY. i hate McDonalds... Greasy bastards. Um, let's see, thats about it. Nothing here AT ALL.

The bad eye-site could be from genetics to, both my parents wear glasses and so do half of my siblings... so ya never know. But my momma says that the computer is the devil and hes ruinin me eyes! hehe ;).

a bit off-topic of the off-topic...
The funny thing is, in EVERY town, no matter the size, there is always that kid who wants to be seen as the nerd. The one who brags about fixing computers and all that 'hard-to-do' stuff. In my town, its this chubby kid with thick brim glasses (He does it for the looks of the nerd of course) and talks really fast in this annoying voice. Kinda like that girl on the Nanny, but this is a guy. He wears a beany hat (yes, the one with the spinning fan on top) and only talks about computers. Which, by my encounters with people on the net, hes a beginner. But seeing as how no one really knows, or cares to know about his "Pentium 4 processor with a gig of DDR ram.." its a pretty funny site, this kid. But sometimes, id just like to kick his ass because he THINKS hes better than anyone who is someone at computers. Well, whats your local nerd kid like ;)?

ya, id say that the computer chair helps a lot... I use to sit in a wooden chair with a wooden backrest.. OUCH. my back hurts just thinking of it. Now i got a somewhat decent 'office chair'... its alright. but im pretty good with my back, i involuntarily sit up straight as if i had a board strapped to my back. :P
