OK this started about a week or two ago. When ever I do a shutdown by Start > Shutdown or pressing the power button, XP shutsdown like normal, then after about 5 seconds it restarts! Also if I flip on the power strip, give it 5 seconds it starts up on its own, which is kinda handy, as I don't have to bend down and press the power button. But that 5 seconds gives me enough time to flip off the strip. Any suggestions?

this happened to my old computer. i tried eveything from a re-format to even installing a new os. i just sent it in to the compan because it was still on warranty and they gave me a brand new one. if u havent tried a reformat do so. and send it to the company if nothin works.

Well I'm not going to do anything as drastic as a reformat, as I'm not sure if the disc that came with it is actuall windows or just a recovery disc Also I don't really want to mess with that and then have to reinstall everything just to solve a minor problem.

Also I'm not so sure it has anything to do with configurations, it may be a hardware or falty wiring or something. Now instead of shutting off I hear the fan give one last rev before stoping so maybe the switching is messed up. I'll still have over 3 years left on waranty, so if it gets worse I'll send it to the company...

if u gonna send it to the company u might aswekk reformat lol they gonna do that anyway. try starting in safe mode and see if u get the same thing.

if you send to comapny, back up everything. that's all i can say.

Well I'm not going to send it to Dell. That is a bit of overkill as would a reformat would be. It's like trying to destroy one building by blowing half the face of the Earth off.

Now if I hold in the power button until it shuts off I don't get that problem. I did that last night and it didn't do it this afternoon.

there are 2 things that could affect the power buttons that i can think of right now

power manegment :open the control panel ,then open powermanegment (something).fiddle about thru thier options ,im sure u will find something about ur problem.
i have the power of button to do a normal shutdown .so if i want 2 shut it down i simply push the poweroff button once .and i can say ,its quite handy

the other things is
BIOS :usually there is also some sort of powermanegment settings in the bios. and there is one specially aimed at power interuptions ,try disabling that and it wouldnt power up by itself after a power out (or interuption). which might be alittle annoying ,but its definatly healthier for the power supply in ur comp and for the comp in general .as fluctuations in power isnt good for ur computer

Well thanks for your suggestions M&M, but no avail. I however didn't think about power options, but I couldn't find anything there. And I have checked the BIOS settings.

no, I AM SURE that there is a power interuption control option in the bios .however maybe it isnt what u have been looking for

I'll check again. Hit F12 at startup right? Maybe the wiring is switched up and that is what it is doing.

i thought its was del that entered bios.... maybe im wrong i havent done it in a while

oh I don't know, but I think it is F12 for me. Watch when you see the manufacture screen, it will tell you there.

I had that same problem once. I had no need to reformat, or send the pc in to the mfr.

It turned out it was a compatability issue with Roxio.

Version 5 did not want to run properly with XP with the updated drivers.

When I went to version 6.0, all was well again.

You could also try right-clicking the icon, going to properties, go to compatability, and change the compatability to windows 98 for v5.

I do have version 5, so how would I go about upgrading to v6?

well,try uninstalling 1st to determine that roxio is the problem .
