Windows Recycle Bin

Post by Lt. Striker »

Ok, my sister deleted a map I was working on, I wasn't very far so it's not a huge deal but I'm wondering this anyway. I have heard about a folder in Windows that when you empty the recycle bin, the files that were in there get compressed a lot and put in there. I don't know if there is such a folder but I am wondering, is there? If there is where is it?

well.the recycle bin is the last "official" gate which a deleted file passes through .if u emptied the recycle bin then the files are "officially" deleted
however ,in reality the file isnt deleted .
usually files take space on ur harddrive ,so if u delete them u tell the operating system that this certain space can now be overwritten .but unless u DID copy anything on the drive after the deletion ,then there is a very big chance that ur file(s) can be recovered .

there are 2 routes u can take ,searching through ur files for backup ,or thru ur HDD to recover it

Backup:
1-usually when u save ur maps ,a .bak file is created which is exactly the same version as the .map file but with a different extension .so try to find that and just rename the extension

2-there is also the autosaves (snapshots) which mohradient sometimes creates (unless u disabled it) .try searching for them too ,and also rename the extension to .map .

Recovery:
1-if u have norton antivirus (or the utilities) installed ,it should make the recycled bin protected .this makes another folder where all deleted files are compressed (after recycled bin) .this tool is usually very powerful in recovering files shortly just after deletion .its impossible to recover anything after a long period of time (like a week )

2-if u dont have ur recycle bin protected (i.e no norton utilities installed whatsoever) then u are going to have to try some sort of recovery programs .usually these arent as good as u would expect ,but they do sometimes recover files if u havent overwritten their space (hopefully)
search for a recovery program on www.google.com or www.downloads.com or any other site that u want to use .download it
and try to use it .

a few programs that i tried
recover4all :v1.4 usually recovers files if u used it very soon
recover4all :v2.0 havent tried it much ,but it seems much much better with more options
recovery wizard :havent used it much also but it seems similar .

hope that helps  !!!

yeah check for .bak and snapshots.

If you've ever noticed when deleting, oh say 1 gig's worth of files it takes a while to move it to the recycle bin, but when emtyping the bin it goes instantlly. Windows removes any reference of it from trees and such that tell where the file is located.

Windows removes any reference of it from trees and such that tell where the file is located.
this means it is still recoverable by recovery programs (unless overwritten)
but betting on that isnt usually safe as the operating system usually keeps writting stuff everywhere

Lol, no she is 15 almost 16 and NO she is not a mapper. She did it to get back at me, cuz I did something that made her mad. She was saying stuff so I deleted some of her stuff on the computer and to get back at me she deleted my and my brothers maps. I wasn't too far so I am not worried, oh and the autosave won't work because my brother was on mohradiant last and his was saved on autosave. I turned snapshots off so I wouldn't have useless files floating around. I will try your recovery idea though M&M. Thanks.

Well now it is a big deal! You know what my sister did!??! She went and deleted ALL my maps! I had this pretty cool map of my own house, pretty cool and big, SHE DELETED IT!!!! SHE DELETED IT!!! I can't believe she did that! I also had some other maps and downloaded pk3s and she deleted them all. :x :x :x :( She just went and deleted my whole MOHAA folder and everything in it! THAT MAKES ME MAD! I am trying desperately to recover my map of my house because I had a pretty good deal of it done. M&M I am trying your idea, sure hope this works. Any suggestions or ideas of getting lost files back?

1st thing to make sure of is DO NOT COPY ANY FILES ON THE DRIVE AFFECTED!!!!!! i could send u recover4all if u want .but i am sure u could find it over the net .if u cant just pm me with ur email, and i will email it 2 u

also ,do u have norton antivirus installed? if it is ,use its built in recovery program ,which usually protects the recycle bin .
its called the norton UNerase Wizard .simply click on the recycle bin to open it and follow the onscreen steps (they are pretty simple to discuss here)
but i have the feeling u dont have that installed (u would have recovered them by now ) so try searching 4 the recovery program .
and another tip ,if there are any files remaining from the "disaster" move them to a safer location  (preferably not on the affected drive),somewhere amongst the system folders would be an ideal position 8-) .
oh and the autosave won't work because my brother was on mohradiant last and his was saved on autosave
did u try all the snapshots?some of them might not be updated to ur brothers version .
I turned snapshots off so I wouldn't have useless files floating around
dont think thats very wise !!! they tak eso much small space and they provide crucial backup for u .usually there is 10 files for each mapname (right?) so they wont get out of control ,but if they do u can simply delete them like the mohaa saves (i had 500mbs worth of saves !!!!)

well,i use recover4all because i cant find a good enough program which is free .most programs i found (when i lost recover4all) were either dos programs !!!! or were useless (i couldnt download any big files because of my 56kbs).
so try that .if it fails then i hope ur sister remains intact
