Okay, So i got my HD reformatted.

I put this Xp cd in my computer, and it doesnt boot up.

I was wondering where i could get Windows XP or maybe something like it off the net??

whoa, i had the same problem. did u put in the cd that came with ur computer? what kid of error do you get?

You can only get linux off the net... any windows version is supposed to be bought...

Your CD drive is control from the hard drive--which you erased. You have to put in your windows backup floppy disk to get started. Then go to the computers bios to swith the primary drive to the cd drive--I think.

Yep, that's what you need to do. Press F8 (more than likely) at the manufacturer screen and change boot priorities...

well,i havent understood what u meant with this ,but i am guessing ur problem is that the setup doesnt load so ,here are 2 solutions

1st:
well,if ur windows xp cd was original it should have a boot up thingy like the start up disk .
however ur system's default is to check the harddrive for boot up 1st .
to change that ,enter the bios (cmos or whatever u call it) then look for an option called boot sequence ,it should be in the advanced options i think .
so what u will do is ,open the bios ,advanced settings ,find boot sequence ,change it so the harddrive has priority 1

usually it look like this

boot sequence: floppy \hdd 0 \ cd-rom

just keep clicking plus or minus (usually) to change the priorities to cdrom

if u changed it and u were successful ,save and exit
then u should see in the booting screen (the one with the table of ur hardware contents,should be 2nd screen)

booting from cd-rom

or something similar
and if ur xp cd was original it should load the setup and start right away

2nd:the other solution is to find a win9x start up disk and use boot with cdrom support ,but u will have to search for the startup disk.

This is the easiest way, if you have one or can get one. Then all you have to do is bring up your cd drive prompt, and type setup. And your off.

the other way is the easiest ,it just looks longer since i presumed he doesnt know it so i explained it thoroughly.u dont have to go thru all the trouble of looking for a startup disk ,and borrowing from a friend then typing a few commands in dos mode .also ,dos setup of windows xp is alot more complicated than just the word "SETUP" .what u said was applicable on win 9x versions

That's ODD, cause it seems that when I do it, I simply slide the floppy in the drive and push the power button in. Then I have to choose an option to boot with cd support. Then all of a sudden this cute little dos prompt appears and I type E:\ and then setup. Besides, if your a beginner or even a novice, messing around in bios is not smart!!!!!!!!!!!!

well,the other way will pass u the trouble of finding a startup disk if u dont have one (which usually is the case with most ppl) .it lets u slide right through to setup without any work .
and i have explained what to change in the bios ,so u cant possibly change anything wrong (unless u wanted to) .

and it stays for ever (unless u change it back) ,so u can use cds to boot up at anytime which is pretty cool since a cd can carry more "diagnostic" tools than a disk

its just 2 different approaches to the solution ,thats y i have mentioned both .
after all the end justifies the means

No biggie, man (or should I say dude). They should both be easy in a sense. but if I remember correctly you cant have a game cd or something else in you pc when booting in this sequence after windows is loaded, But I could be wrong. (It happens alot more than I want to admit)

At least he should be able to fix it after this awesome forum.

well,if the cdrom has an unbootable cd ,then the bios just looks for the next thing specified in the boot sequence (usually the hdd ) and checks it for boot then loads up (if there was any on the hdd) w/o stopping

boot sequence: cdrom \hdd 0 \ floppy

in this case ,it checks the cdrom then hdd 0 (1st hdd) then the floppy .

the only bad thing about the 1st way is that if u have any other boot cd in the cdrom it would boot it up (what are the odds of that to happen?)

currently i have only 3 boot cds
1 is the motherboard 's cd which loads the flash bios utility
2 is the windows xp cd (yes ,i managed to get it 2 boot)
3 is a cd i made up which has alot of utilities i could use from dos mode

agreed dude these are my favorite forums ,ive only made one map (not many plans for another) and im not much of a scripter but i stay here because of the fun of it and the community here 2

I just installed xp over windows ME.
I made a boot disk first, formatted me hard drive then rebooted w/boot disk, then did an install w/xp. Its real easy man... or should I say Dude!

This is why if you leave a floppy in the drive, that is not a boot disk you get an error. If you have a boot disk to install XP that should be easier, but the hastle of finding one...
