i made this thread because i thought that sig was cool and jv_map told me i shoud remove it because its considered spyware !!!
however no1 else but u can see the info in my sig (since it detects only the computer being used)
also ,doesnt any site scan for ip addresses? so y should this sig be considered spyware?

the only reason i think they (ppl who dont like my sig) hate my sig ,is because they thing that personal info is being displayed to other users .however ,the info displayed by this sig ,is just displayed for the comp with this data (not any other ,so i or any 1else cant see it)

this data is also sent to any site u surf ,so i dont think its that "personal"

Well, it IS actually being displayed to other users, mainly the people that make those sigs. And it's ok for .map to know i'm visiting it, but it's not ok for other sites to know what forums i visit, when and how often.

By the way, what do these things display when you're connecting through a proxy server/

I didn't really mind to much, as I'm the only that can see it. I can't really be the judge of this, but jv may not mind it himself, but for reliability reasons if someone came here, saw that and tried to sue or something...

I'm all with jv on this one. If you made your own picture generator engine and used it in this way: I'd have no problem with it. But this is a company that fooles sig users to use the "cool gadget" sig, thinking it is harmless. Its just that the server that generates that sig can collect data on the usage of any location that uses that sig ( like this forum ).

And in doing so they can sell data on you to companies like spam senders and so on. And if it can be sold: shouldent you get a part of that money? Or even better: shouldent .MAP? I mean, by allowing that sig, we effectively allow a third part to spy on our users... anybody else feel a bit used now?

You know how the ip adress above was in Britian, when I am in US? Well there is something called anonymous proxy that basically block your real ip#.

when something shows my comp data on my screen right in front of me and on a public site, i flip.

its just javascript, not spyware. unfortunately (fortunately?) stuf like that cant be send to someone else withought additional lines of scripting. if u really dont like it, have M&M put it on photobucket or soemthing, so no the company u got it from wont steal it, if they magiaclly figure out how to, even though the code does nothing fo the sort. AND .map cud do it too if they wanted, so i wud let him keep it, and it isnt spyware.

Even JavaScript can mail back, and there is no guarentee it is javascript, i could do the same in PHP and PHP has loads more IP functions and stuff.

if an admin requests for it to be taken off, you must respect their decisision

look at the script and tell me its not javascript. and yes java can amil it back, but that script isnt. AND it only displays the persons looking at it's ip AANNDD it doesnt store them anywhere

i wasnt talking about this specific script as such i was more talking about general mistrust and lack of cauition of internet files/scripts in general. and im not denying ur javascript knowledge - i hadnt looked at the source therefore woudn't know, and again, i was talking about eneral scripts and alike fun programs. i understand JavaScript aswell, I was merely pointing out that with content like this users that don't know code of any type can't be too careful, and also users that see their PC details address on an image are going to get suspicious as to how their IP/ISP/OS was obtained, and may suspect that someone may be using their data.
