Hello, Im pleased to announce the release of my map renverse.
This map is a complete reworking of Southern France with all new vibrant textures and various other changes.
This map will be DMW3 protected
The .zip is just under 8 mb the reason for this is the 5mb of custom textures and also the fact that it is the size of a stock map.
Please dont be put off by the size as I believe its worth the download.
This is the first of many maps I intend to produce.
You can get your copy direct from www.battlearenas.com/downloads/renverse.zip

Thx guys for your most encouraging replies, I hope it doesn't dissapoint.
I did make many errors along the way but with the assistance of tutorials and generaly reading other peoples posts I got to grips with most of the problems.
I have learned a great deal via this project so my next project will no doubt improve for the expierience.
Thx again.
Seere.

Hey seere, finally got a chance to run around your map and it did not diappoint. Very well done, and I must say you have a real talent for textureing and detail. I did find a couple of problems:

1) In the room with the crate and barrels there is a crate and a group of three barrels crossing into each other and it is extremely noticeable.

2) The bench under the bridge has the three bars to rest your back on, the one side doesnt extend to the side arm rest. There is a slight gap.

3) There is a crate that is stacked on top of a couple others and it leans out and looks totally unnatural as in it is impossible for a real crate to sit like that.

That is about it seere the rest its very close to perfection...and dont worry seere every map has its problems, even stock maps.

If you need some screens of what I mean let me know.

Great job!

I appreciate your observations rancid and I know there are some minor issues with the map, Typical that i checked it millions of times and miss the obvious! :?
As we all know as map makers the time of the last minute detail and final compiles is an extremely tedious and long process and if i could turn back time I would certainly correct them few errors..(im sure there are more)
As it is and as its a 8mb download I dont think I will correct these errors as I'm hoping people will forgive me for my errors and I promise I wont make them next time :D
Cheers rancid...could have done with you in testing.
Seere.

Hey seere no problem. I completely understand the reason you dont want to fix the small problems...that final compile is a real pain...(I didn't even do one for my map, dont tell anyone though). I dont see a big difference...I will on my next map though...such a pain though. Looking forward to seeing more maps from you seere. Hey you should enter some of the competitions we hold here. Just got done with the bridge competition but we'll be starting up a new one soon.

Erm.. I'm sorry to say this but I get almost unplayable fps most of the time(?). My system is an AMD1600+256ddr+GF2Ti; not the fastest but more than enough to play Mohaa. I've tried rebooting and starting Mohaa and the map over and over again but it didn't make a difference.
When I noclipped through the map I noticed a lot of redundant faces and also big unlit parts that should have been caulked away. Also I noticed you didn't mitter the walls* and other similar brush connections which mean you get more faces than needed. Did you use caulk at all? If not or hardly then I really suggest you look into it again (or at least think about it; this probably also clears up a bit why a fullcompile was taking so long). I can imagine you don't wanna hear about redoing stuff but it will definitely be worth the effort and make the map playable for people who don't have a killer system. Weird that no one else here has noticed that problem.

(*by this I mean making walls connect like the first method:)

Code: Select all

   ______.
1] ____ /|
       | |
   ____._.
2] ____| |
       | |
However, this doesn't take away the fact that the map in itself is pretty good (including the ton of nice custom textures), but performance can certainly be optimized.

Well thankyou for your comments Pantera and you have some valid ones...yes i did not caulk enough surfaces and made the mistake of texturing prior to caulking.
Your comments on fps are one of the only ones I have heard to date... I guess your graphics card is inferior to most these days.
A hell of alot of walls and brush joints are mitred I assure you.
Back to the fps..as you said I have used many custom textures and I am attempting to bring the game forward by 2 1/2 years by textures that are superior or as good as breakthrough.
Many people have in those 2 1/2 years updated there graphics cards in that time.
I appreciate it isnt perfect but at the same time I havent seen many better first time efforts?
I have never mapped before at any level for any game so its inevitable that mistakes will be made.
I am not a proffesional and dont pretend to be.
Thank you again.
Seere.

Yeah okay I guess you're right about the graphics card but it's always a good thing to keep somewhat slower cards in mind. Nevertheless I can run a lot of (new) custom maps fluently but in this case I guess it hit the max. Although I have seen some very good first efforts before, Renverse certainly fits that category, please don't get me wrong on that! Sorry if it sounded a little negative.
Seriously, I know what it's like to spend months on a map as I've made quite a few maps for other games (and at the moment I'm still working on my Moh-map, been at it for ~15 months now..). It's obvious that you've spent a lot of time on this map and it shows you have the talent. There are quite a few nice touches in the map like the 'painted background' texture to mask the borders of the map, nice decorations inside the rooms and so on. And not only that, I really do like the way you and Marax delivered the total package; it shows attention to detail to have a clean pk3 with everything working and in place, as it should be. So besides some fps problems I encountered I do think it's a keeper. Be proud of it and thank You for the map.
-Pantera.
