Building a bannister for a staircase, at 45 degrees. meets a horizontal bannister at the top of the stairs

ok now method one would be makin a brush 8 units thick and rotating it to 45 degrees, doesnt snap to grid, if u snap to grid using grid units 1, the size changes, rotate it back horizontal it looks about 8.5, infact using pythagaros it is 8.48528 blah blah blah.
using this method, making a horiztonal beam the same thickness is now impossible.
Method 2: make square 8*8 using clipper tool cut out a bannister, ull see the size perpendiular to the bannister is less than the edges at either end
using pythagaros this time the width is 5.6 ish, again impossible to make a hoizrontal beam.
how on gods green earth do i do this? i may be a little tired but what is the way this is done? should i settle with one beam 5.6 and one 5?
there has to be a more accurate way of makin a beam at 45 degrees

There are a lot of ways, some you have already tired. What I like to do is to drag the end face of the bannister down to meet the post. You do that by looking from the side and holding the left mouse button and Ctrl down just outside the face. Then drag the edge down slowly. If it overlaps, just cut the end off flush with the post.
But, if it is exactly 45 degrees, just rotate the brush and trim the ends. Another way is to make a big brush on the side of the steps and use the steps as a guide to cut it. Steps do not have to be 16 x 16 but should never be less than 12 deep--or the players fall down them.
BTW, there is a very nice staircase in map M4l0 (docs folder).
