Another noob question from Dingo... When I add in my railing it doesn't look like it fits, so how do I put it in so that it looks like an actual railing?

The top of the railing is almost invisible.... and it almost seems like its double... it seems way out of proportion.

did u try to remake it? or was it a prefab ? try going into grid 1 and make small adjustments and see if that fixes it

i 1st press f12 ingame to capture the screen , then brighten it if neccessary .and turn it into an .jpg file (cause .tga isnt displayed over the net and because its much smaller)
then i upload it to my account at
www.photobucket.com (free)

Most railing-textures have 'cull none' in the shader, so when you don't use the nodraw texture it will be drawn from both sides and looks doubled.
-When making a railing with such texture you need to make a brush the size you want and apply the common/nodraw-texture to all 6 sides first.
-Next you select one side (ctrl+shift+leftmouse) and apply the railing texture to this one side only, either the front or the back. You will now see a very slim railing ingame which is basicly nothing more than 1 brushface (the one with the railing texture), drawn from both sides. The rest of the brushfaces, including the top face, is not being drawn because of the nodraw texture.
-At this moment seen from above (and sides) it will look like a hair-line, so the best thing to do is add another brush and place it on top of your railing;
Code: Select all
(okay, just try to visualize this)
Side view:
_ <- another brush placed as a 'lit' on top
| <- railing brush
Also do this with the side ends of the railing, so you'll get this:
Front view:
___________
]|||||||||[
______
= the topbrush
|||||| = the railing brush
] and [ = the sidebrushes
flat

For railings, you would normmally use nodraw on all but one side of the brush. The top/bottom rails are just normal brushes with wood or metal texture, as are the corner posts in most cases.
The advantage of using a railing texture is that you don't have to make all the posts and the preformance of your map will go up with fewer faces. Also, there are some nice metal posts that you would have a hard time making with normal brushes or patch mesh.
