how can i recover a .map file?

about 8 months ago I made a map for mohaa.. I never quite finished it and would like to do so now. However, I have lost the .map file. I have the .pk3 which contains the .scr and .bsp and whatever else I may need. So I downloaded this program called mohaa tools and it suppose to let me convert my bsp into a .map. However once I do this it comes up with messages saying how its a beta and can only export 10000 brushes and my map has 12044. I then convert it into a .map file anyway and When i load it in mohradiant it is seems to be missing lots of walls and such. perhaps I need a later version of moha tools or something?
could any1 give me the heads up on what I need to do?

well wherever you saved ur map (mohaa/main/maps maybe?) there should be a .bak file. either
1. rename to .map, then open in radiant
or
2. open in radiant if u cant rename it, as a .bak, then save it as a .map
i think thats right... im sayin it off memory so hope it helps!
good luck,

decompile

Decompiling your map causes so many errors that starting over will seem the best option in the end. Use what you got and copy a few brushes at a time to a new map. Repair them, and go back for a few more. You might think about making your map smaller this time, as well.

dont think thats a possibility after such a long time !!! he probably deleted that file since its usually side to side with the .map file

that just sums it all up .decomiling a map will almost destroy it ,repairing the damage would take ages (depending on the size of map) .do lke tltrude said ,and make the general layout similar to the decompiled version of ur map ,should be fairly simpler (in comparison)
there is a different decompiler program which i usually use (if i want 2 decompile) and its called mohbsptomohmap ,u should find it at the rjukan site ,there was a link here of an updated version of it in one of the threads .try looking in the previous pages of this forum or do a search in the mapping forum !!
but this decompiler (which is considered the best) doesnt make a perfect .map file cause its practically impossible since alot of data is lost from the conversion .
hope that helps !! (and doesnt put u down

hmm. MY hard drive has been formated at least a dozen times since I made my map. any .bak is long gone. I in fact thought i lost the map forever but I found one friend who had the .pk3 still on his computer and thats how i was able to get it back. I could swear i backed up the .map file in the past but i guess i didnt cause i roamed threw 100s of loose cds in my house and found nothing.
restarting my map is not an option. I took me almost 4 months to make the thing working many hours a day. I guess it will never be finished then.. I dont mind that much as it is still very playable.. but a finished version would of been amazing. oh well.. thanks anyway guys.
BTW.. why couldent they just make it so you map file is actually contained within the .pk3 and that is what you would actually play. I suppose this means just any job blow could take some guys map and altar it but it would sure help people in my situation.

Why not include the .map with your pk3? Of course your friends could use the source, but maybe they're not on of us mappers...

well, after a format .u can recover stuff unless u insall or copy some data .then its gone for good .but a dozen reformats will surely erase it just the same
