looking at a few maps to the early hours Yawn!!! I noticed that metal staicases and metal grills had the no draw texture on the underneath of the steps or the back of the grill. why does no draw need to be there? what effect does it have?

Nodraw is basically something you'd put on unseen faces of a brush w/ transparent textures to stop them from drawing.

see-thru

When a texture is see-through (like a grate), all the faces can be seen right through the brush. So, nodraw texture is applied to all but one face. Try making two brushes with grate texture--one with, and one without nodraw and you'll see what we mean.

Some textures have cull none in thier shader . That means that you can see the texture from both sides . If you don't use nodraw you will see a double image on the brush from the textures on the top and bottom of the brush . This is usually used for fences and grates or any texture that is partly transparent sometimes . It also means when used on a mesh like a patch mesh or cylinder that it can be seen from either side of the mesh .
