What is the difference?

What is the difference between a full compile and a fast compile?

Fast compile = 4 mins
Full compile = 3 hours and counting (on 79% vis done)

Is it really worth it?

Try about 20 or more fps difference all over the entire map. Fast compiles are fine for testing but if you dont take time to compile the vis you may notice your maps perform poorly in gameplay situations.

There are tons of threads on this topic already though. After reading a few of em for you i think this one is most related to your question. viewtopic.php?t=7541&highlight=fast+compile\

Now here is the funny part after compiling dozens of different projects i cant say for sure i know exactly what everyone should be using for a final compile. Ive read all the boards on all the forums and there is always a great difference of opinions on what to do. So the best thing i would suggest to you is find out what the definitions for all the options are and then see what works best for you.

Personally i set my blocksize to 0, (and the more i learn about mapping the more i think i should stop using this one) and I have the final light options checked in light options of mBuilder.

Hope this helps somehow.

Nah no wet noodle for you since you didnt start with im sure this has already been asked dozens of times and then in the end you asked for an opinion of "is it worth it?"

But dont worry i got my eye on you

I compile like this for the final release:
BSP stage: Nothing extra
VIS stage: Nothing extra
LIGHT stage: -final -staticshadows

And for a really quick look:
BSP stage: Nothing extra
VIS stage: Skip this one completely
LIGHT stage: Skip this one completely

When I want to see a half-good render during developnent:
BSP stage: Nothing extra
VIS stage: -fast
LIGHT stage:-fast

The -blocksize 0 I don't use any more, it saves time during vis compile, but explanations om blocksize I've read has convinced me to drop it, because it can drop FPS in some special cases.
The -staticshadows adds a lot to light compile, but I feel the finished results make up for that.

What do u mean with nothing extra? Do u mean that I don't have to select an option for it?

It means:

Code: Select all

C:\Rad\Q3map -gamedir C:\MOHAA C:\maps\my.map
C:\Rad\Q3map -vis -gamedir C:\MOHAA C:\maps\my.map
C:\Rad\MOHlight -final -staticshadows -gamedir C:\MOHAA C:\maps\my.map
