How long would it take to make an average size map?

depends on your skill, free time, etc.

Also depends on your style of mapping, if you just go through slap stuff in as you go, or if you plan it all out. How well you do it the first time, that changes the amount of optimization and such... Also the type of map, how detailed. Just start building one and find out.

well, i've never actually finished a map. i'm working on a pretty elaborate defending styled map i call Euro, i've worked on it for about,oh, three weeks and i'd say i'm a third of the way done. the major apping is done and lots of scripting is finished, but i have yet to finish all the spawns etc....

so in short, we'll see how good the map is, how thought out, etc. when you release it. if this is your very first attempt at maping then obviously it's going to be a little bad. mine was awful. pretty much most of my mapping was awful up til this point when i started looking into techniques to impriove fps and visual looks........

BLue's an awesome mapper, he takes about a month or two to create a map from scratch and it's a good one.

in the end... a map takes as long as it takes... and probably(at least for me) is never 'finished', they jsut get evntualy into 'acceptable' form.
