Correct grate textures?

Hey well, I don't know if any of you can answer this.. but I have used several methods of making grates/walk ways (like on v2). I found the right one at one point, but have since forgotten it.

I've been trying to figure out what I did.. but at any rate, if anyone has an explanation about how to make a good grate (not double layered) feel free to post it.

Use a simple 3 x 3 patch mesh or put "nodraw" texture on all but one side of a brush. The patch mesh is easier on the engine.
