Everything you need to know about modeling: UPDATED FOR PA.

Post by Yarik »

This is an intro to modeling, it is designed to get you started making models. Hope you like it! :D

Well, the first thing you need is a good 3d modeling program. Here are some good ones:

Gmax
http://www4.discreet.com/gmax/
This is a watered down 3DSMax program. It is FREE and it supports a few games.

3DSMax
http://www4.discreet.com/3dsmax/
It costs some money, but it is probably one of the best programs out there. Shrek was made in here. Discreet offers a free 30 day trial. But becarefull it is over 1 gig in size.

Maya3D
http://www.alias.com/eng/index_flash.shtml
Also a very powerfull 3d program. It is free for students and non comercial use, the license is around 3k.

Blender3D
http://www.blender3d.com/
Free open source 3d program. Very nice and about 3 megabites big. But well worth the download.

Lightwave
http://www.newtek.com/
Lightwave is another very powerfull 3d program. It has a trial demo.

Milkshape3D
http://www.swissquake.ch/chumbalum-soft/
This is a not so powerfull program, it costs around 30 bucks, and has a free trial. But it has plugins for A LOT of games so check it out.

This is a list of tutorials that will help you with your education.

www.google.com
This is a VERY powerfull search engine. Use it wisely to search for new tutorials or plugins.

Here is a link to rendering in GMAX:

yes it is. there are a number of plugins to support .map file from .gmax file, you can also make your own static objects as well if thats what you mean, check out the .tik files of existing ones to see how the .tik is made, just model/skin/tiki and it'll be integrateable.

i've never made a .bsp fro .gmax (partially becuaese i sorta hate gmax) but i have heard of a plugin for it.

i was thinking more along the lines of new people/ equipment

i was working on a kayaker in lightray 3d but i cant afford the full version so i cant export it :( (i only just started learning modeling so its no get loss)

i tried to inport some .skd and .skc files in to gmax but they dont work, it says wrong file type

so thats why i dont know if mohaa is supported

also am i right in thinking that the animation i make the model do in gmax is the animation the model will do in the game?

thanks for any help

well, i cant tell you a lot since i've never done this myself, barely got a 48 poly mug out there, my only model lol

right, gmax only supports .gmax file type, you'll need soemthing to convert it to .gmax. i'm sure www.turbosquid.com has something somewhere.

animation-wise, i have no idea. never worked with animation. all i know is bones, you move them, the guy moves. that's all i know. i would think so, but liek i said, it's jsut a guess.

 You have a long way to go to learn all of this, frankly no one can explain this to you in a day... well they can if only they skip a lot of parts. Anyways, your best bet is to use google.com and search for tutorials

-3d tutorials
-3d bone tutorials
-etc etc

And practice a lot...

One more thing, if you have a question about modeling, dont reply to this post please. It is a merley a links and help thread.... Just post a new topic in the modeling section, there are a few people who are more than willing to help
