Audioscrobbler

Audioscrobbler is a computer system that builds up a detailed profile of your musical taste. After installing an Audioscrobbler Plugin, your computer sends the name of every song you play to the Audioscrobbler Server. With this information, the Audioscrobbler server builds you a 'Musical Profile'. Statistics from your Musical Profile are shown on your Audioscrobbler User Page, available for everyone to view.

With this information, Audioscrobbler is able to automatically generate suggestions for new songs/artists you might like. These suggestions are based on the same principles as Amazon's "People who bought this also bought X,Y,Z", but because the Audioscrobbler data is what people are actually listening to, the suggestions tend to make more sense than Amazon.

This is a very cool site. I signed up almost two weeks ago, and it's cool to see what other kinds of people listen to the songs you listen to. It's also private:

-They do not display email addresses, so no-one can link your username to your email address or harvest your address for spamming.

-Plugins only send the name of the artist/album/song - not the filename, filetype or any other id3 info. This means they cannot tell whether your music is from an original CD or an MP3 file.

-They rotate their webserver logs frequently and destroy them after extracting anonymous statistics.

-Their protocol and plugins are open source, and spyware free.

If you're interested, check it out. It's definitely neat.

Here's the link to my user page, so you can see what I listen to:

woot! Modest Mouse is one of the best bands out there these days I think. I have every song I can find that they have ever done. Ever heard of Ugly Casanova...The used to be lead singer of modest mouse started this band and its equally good. That band has gone through a couple of lead singers now, I like the older one who did Dramamine, but the new singer isnt that bad. Thanks for the link Ill check it out and post my profile back.

I've heard of them, but I've never really had a chance to check them out. Thanks for the recommendation, though!

lol modest mouse and reel big fish dont belong in the same list!

modest mouse is awesome though, on thier newest album alone, many many examples of beauty in chaos. An instant classic... Black caddilacs is my favorite... no wait.. the ocean breathes salty.,.. no.. once chance... arg...

Well that is that and this is this.
Will you tell me what you saw and I'll tell you what you missed,
when the ocean met the sky.
You missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye.
When the earth folded on itself.
And said "Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell
are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath."
You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?
You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?

havent gotten around to listening to thier other albums as of yet.
