I believe this map has not had its fair say/play. As a part of a mod, its plays are sadly limited. For all of you whom have not played the Modern Warfare mod, you have seriously missed out. I'll let the map speak for itself; Read on!
Presentation / Technical
This map looks the part. The Docks look like docks, the grotty surburbia looks just that, grotty in the best possible way. Features I really picked up on, were such like: roadsigns, shop signs, technical boat drawings, the generators, the tyre shop, and the list could go on! Also, the custom models used were fantastic! Only one big glitch with texturing I found, was inside reflective windows that didn't cover up the wood on the other side and were a little too clear in the vision of snowy plains and trees that I failed to see on the opposite wall! But for a map this large and complex; I'm highly suprised to find only one error. Well done, Great marks! Oh, and the second map with a bird circling I've reviewed today. Except this one swoops too... Great touch!
I loved strolling around the map, everything was varied whilst still fitting in; 'conformist variability'. It certainly worked wonders to add to the natural feel of the map. Some absolutely amazing details going down; The boats especially made me stare. Generators, tactically placed sheet metal and such, all worked wonders for 'the effect'. A lesser mapper would have sure crumpled under the pressure of building something so complex; this was pulled off perfectly. A few areas of lessened FPS on my old machine but nevertheless; Good marks.
Not just structurally and texturally wonderful, but also auditorily great. Sea effects, gulls, wind, all one would expect to naturally find at the docks, and also the man made noises like the generators and fog-horns at sea (on a sunny day? Never mind, it sounded good!) All the sounds came together in a quiet subtle blend which had a great effect for the natural feel of this map! Top marks!
Due to a certain room in this map, I am led to believe this map has no ambientlight at all. Which I find, for such a well lit map, very impressive! Light sources came together well to create a dingy effect in some places, and a lively effect in others. No real great lighting effects stood out, but as practical and atmostpheric lighting goes, top notch.
A highly creative, well themed and beautifully scripted map. That is hard to elaborate on as that says it all, so for technical, I'll leave it at that!
Playability / Game Flaws
Having played countless games of Modern Warfare in the past, I can say with assurance this map is a popular favourite. Having played this map therefore alot, I can also say with assurance, this map is truly, highly, fun. The routes are great, and the objectives! Wow, just the feel of driving the fork-lift with a nuke, being able to choose the route the van travels, the way the spawns advance with the teams; scripting of infinite artistry.
Conclusion
A wonderfully scripted, beautifully crafted map. Its worth downloading Modern Warfare for, infact! Sometimes it size and complexity can work against it, however, as it is easy to get lost with few players playing. Great fun, Well done S.C. and jv_map!
